I'm hyped on this dude...

September 28, 2007

I'm a little late on this one, as it seems all the other cool blogs have posted it already, but whatever. I was out skating all day in NYC. Obviously they weren't if they had enough free time to blog while the sun was out. Skate more, blog less!

Anyway, I'm so much worse at skating tranny than this guy, and I have 20/20 vision. Seriously, Tommy Carroll, I salute you.

On another note, in an "ironic" kinda way, I'm hyped on Handstand Man. I wonder how many photos he's...

Cintra was Winter Steele? Who knew?!

September 28, 2007

Years before discovering the life-altering A Massive Swelling, I remember being like eight or nine years of age and watching Winter Steele on Liquid Television. It was only recently I discovered that my new career counselor, dear friend, mentor, author of my favorite book and bearer of the sexiest brains on the planet, Cintra Wilson, happened to be the creator and voice of Winter Steele. Funny that.

When I was wee: part II

September 28, 2007

I was born and raised a few blocks away from the now-famous Holsten's ice cream parlor in Bloomfield, NJ. Why is it famous, you ask? Well, the final scene of the Sopranos** was shot there. As a tyke, I used to walk to Holsten's after grade school in my little green uniform and tie with my friends and buy lots of candy.

I moved away from there to another part of NJ in 1989, but always swung back around to Holsten's once or twice a year after I got my license. I'm nostalgic...

enjoi: 2, etnies: 0

September 28, 2007

Yes, I work for etnies and often toil over how to prevent us from being a total mockery in the industry. No, (in case you even had to wonder) I had nothing to do with this almost-funny, almost-clever faux enjoi ad that was made internally as a "joke" and then mass emailed around by the maker of said ad.

There are at least three typos in the enjoi blog above, though. So, as fun and nostalgic (ie: Rocco, World Industries, Big Brother) as it is, instead of all this battling...

Sometimes you gotta have a chicken fight...

September 26, 2007

I was alerted of this photo's existence over on the TWS site a few days ago. God, I gotta step up my skate blog browsing. I'm outta touch and washed up! Too much skating in NJ to keep up!

Not sure who had the idea, and I don't really remember this happening, but evidently beer + ASR + Star Bar = chicken fights and pissed bouncers. That's my boy Blair on my shoulders. I'm kinda weak. I wonder how long I would have held him up before my utter demise.

Hellride!

September 26, 2007

I gave this board to an old friend about 11 years ago. Saw him last week and he still had it in his garage. All hail memory lane!

It was an Alien Workshop slickbottom and I peeled off the slick and skated the hell out of it. I kinda miss the days of skating a board to death like this, but I'm just far too picky and bitchy to deal with it in my old age.

Al Partanen

Al Partanen
By Rob Brink
The Skateboard Mag September 2007

Al Partanen started skateboarding in Milwaukee, and since those first Midwest thens and theres it's been a non-stop collision course with all that's ever had to do with skateboarding. From the very beginning he and his friends skated it all. If someone had a ramp or they heard about a ditch or an empty bank-to-wall pool, they were there. "I miss those times," Al says. "Those were like the most die-hard times where we had the most fun. There were days when there would be snow banks along the roads and we'd go out wearing a couple extra sweatshirts and skate curbs in the parking structures underground."

And from that point he kept starting—parks, stairs, rails, and everything that leads to an eventual laundry list of skate experience so diverse, there's really no way to explain it to anyone who hasn't gone through the same. Like with you, like with us, like with Al—each day skating is a new inferno. A possibility to take the abridged inventory to the gnarliest spots, heat it all, and see what can get started. Smoke and fire—Partanen lights skateboarding up.

Amanda Blank: Philly rapper on the come up
By Rob Brink
Missbehave #4

I'd been harassing rapper Amanda Blank for days before I finally got her on the line. Having just engaged in some lazy Sunday afternoon "boo lovin,'" Blank, 24, was still lying in bed. Naked. Now, I'm all for professionalism and as this was our first time speaking, I was gentlemanly enough to only wait three minutes before engaging in important topics like fingerbanging, handjobs and boners.
