New Jack: Jon Goemann
By Rob Brink The Skateboard Mag September 2006
After a few years of hanging out with, observing and interviewing young up-and-coming ams in skateboarding, something kind of inspiring and refreshing that I've noticed is a certain amount of innocence and carefree attitude that emanates from them. Qualities that, if we aren't careful, are easily lost to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, aging, girlfriends, careers, money and whatnot.
Speaking to these ams these types of interviews are probably the only time I'm happy to hear “I don't know” as an answer to my questions. Because really, it kinda just means they aren't thinking too hard. And when people don't think to hard, you can bet your pimpled ass they are getting' busy living for the moment and having a good time. In Jon Goemann's case, he seems to be kicking back and enjoying the ride. Poker, candy, skateboarding, breaking and losing expensive shit and a whole lot of not knowing God I envy this kid and you should too. Because with the style of a modern old skateboarding soul, heaps of well-rounded ability and pop and a unique satchel of tricks, for certain, one question you won't be able to answer “I don't know” to will be "Who is Jon Goemann?"
Darrell wore some colorful gear and flair to go with it.
Hype up Shaun White and his 1080 for days, weeks even...then, after 14 tries (the entire 30 minutes of the Vert Best Trick contest), as he gets closer to landing it...make him stand on the platform for 15 minutes with four douchebags blocking off the ramp by standing on the flatbottom while ESPN goes to commercial. The general concensus: "If he's not gonna land it on live TV for ESPN's cameras, then he's not gonna land it on this ramp at all."
Way to go, jerk offs. We know you don't really give a shit about skateboarding, but you could you maybe at least pretend to care?
This is what happens when I go home to NJ and skate with my friends. Be warned, the only reason this video is here is so the people in it can have access to it, lest you should think I was trying to impress anyone with our skateboarding prowess, or lack thereof, rather. If I was any good at skateboarding, I wouldn't be writing about it for a living now would I?
I wrote this piece for the shoebox of the new etnies Rune Glifberg pro model, the Forsvar. Pretty stoked. Never wrote for a shoebox before. It looks pretty different from anything you've ever seen, as far as shoeboxes go, the design dudes went off on this one...so be sure to check it out.
Christiania was formed in 1971 and is a partially self-governing neighborhood in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Christiania has established semi-legal status as an independent community and is the only place in Denmark, and possibly even the world, where there is a city/society that governs itself within an already-existing city/society.
Check out this kid. Must be some two-time WWF champion or something. Only in NJ would an eight-year-old kid be sitting in a skatepark with no shirt, a straight face and two imitation wrestling belts on. I love NJ.
So I edited this Hot Dogs & Hessians video yesterday, right? But me, being the dumbass amateur that I am, left out the big Arto "ender ender banger." On top of that nonsense, I couldn't even figure out how to edit it into the already-completed footy I posted. Oh well. Here it is, all by it's lonesome. Enjoi it.
Here is the footage from last Thursday's Hot Dogs & Hessians demo at Active in Costa Mesa. I got a fisheye lens so I'm stoked. Footy from the San Dimas and Fontana stops soon.
Was down at Active in Costa Mesa today with the etnies crew for the Hot Dogs and Hessians BBQ/Demo/gathering. You want names? Arto, Steamer, Leeper, Duncombe, Jake Brown, Weiss, Bickerstaff, Colamonico, Austin Stephens, Rob Gonzales, Montoya, Darrell, Watkins, Aultz, Guzman, Lauren Perkins and more. But most importantly...Sean Sheffey was there! Totally random. Totally rad. If you don't know about Sheffey, then you got some homework to do. Check out Life skateboard's A Soldier's Story one of these days. Your mind will be blown. There's two more days of this Hot Dogs and Hessians thing in SoCal, so stay tuned for lots of photos and a ton of video.
